Either way, I love how this came out. I don't think there are any (major) mistakes.

I really want to draw Luchia as a mermaid one day...

Photo-editing program like PSP or something, you pick the color (usually white or a lighter version of whatever color the object is) and knock down the opacity on it to somewhere between 40-60%ish so that the color will be transparent, and have it on like an airbrush/paintbrush type setting so that it's very smooth, and you just click and make a big dot of "shine". O-o;
